Scott Jensen

Third year apprentice, Scott Jensen, was chosen by the Local 125 to compete in the UA District 4 Regional Apprentice Competition in St. Paul, MN. He was the only refrigeration apprentice chosen by the East Central Iowa Local 125.

The event took place from June 7-9th, 2017 and was hosted by the Local 455 at their 100,000 square foot facility. Other states represented at the competition included IL, KS, MN, MO, MT, ND, SD, NE, and WI.

Local 455 St. Paul 100,000 sq.ft. FacilityScott, along with seven other competitors in the refrigeration/service tech division, took part in a half-day written test followed by one and half days of practical application.

The practical application portion consisted of working on a full-scale piping project.

During that time he was given six spontaneous service calls where a piece of equipment (boiler, chiller, makeup air, ice machine/reach-in cooler, rooftop unit, and burner) was intentionally sabotaged. He was given one hour to troubleshoot each of these calls.

After each service call, he returned to the piping project until he was called again. Once the main piping project was completed, along with service calls, Scott was then required to complete an electrical challenge to sum up the one and half day competition.

We were proud to have Scott represent Brecke Mechanical and Local 125 in this competition. His attitude and aptitude is what helps make our refrigeration division one of the best in the area!

Brecke has played a very large role in improving our facility. Without your Brecke team, we would not be where we are today.

Brecke Mechanical Contractors is proud of the work completed in the Woodland Building at Meth-Wick Community. We helped with many facets of the renovation, including:

  • Kitchens in each area of the living facility. Previously, there was just one big kitchen, but it was determined that having multiple kitchens created a more “homelike” atmosphere.
  • Physical Therapy area, including a workout area, therapy pool, and shower area
  • Water heaters
  • All piping

The Black Sheep Social Club features “Great Gatsby” era ambience at its finest. Every detail exemplifies how much time and effort has gone into this exciting new addition to downtown Cedar Rapids. We’re proud to have helped make this renovation such a success!

The four-story, 100-year-old building has approximately 10,600 sq. ft. per floor. There is also an addition to the south for bathrooms and the elevator. A fifth-level features a lounge for the owner’s condo, which is half of levels three and four. There are seven unique and luxurious condos above the social club, several of which are either occupied or ready for occupation. The project cost on this multi-use facility, which combined commercial and residential space, was just over $4 million.

We had two workers on site for just over two-years to do the entire renovation, which included:

  • Demolition of the existing piping system for the entire building
  • Adding a lower-level ramp with radiant hot water heat
  • Domestic water booster system for the entire building
  • New cast iron drain waste and ventilation system for the entire building
  • All copper water lines with 1.5″ color-matched PVC jacketed insulation throughout the building
  • Instantaneous Navies® hot water heaters throughout the building
  • The owner’s condo has a Navies® combination unit to serve the radiant indoor heat and domestic hot water needs
  • Multi-level slide from the owner’s living room to the social club
  • New plumbing and separate gas systems for the condos, Black Sheep Social Club, and the future Clock House Brewery
  • Installation of the new brewery began in June 2016

As a celebration of Women in Construction week, our NAWIC Chapter 160 has donated nearly $1,000 worth of goods to Waypoint this year.

Waypoint provides shelter and support for those in crisis due to homelessness, poverty or domestic violence. It also provides quality child care to over 500 children daily of all socio-economic levels. This program relies 100% on donations.

Feed Iowa First is so grateful for what Brecke has made possible by plumbing our pack house.

feed-iowa-first.jpgFeed Iowa First has 12 farms that equal about 25 acres of vegetable production. This year we produced almost 30,000 lbs. of vegetables, of which, 100% was donated. All of the vegetables need to be washed before going to Meals on Wheels, Mission of Hope, Green Square Meals, HACAP, and food pantries.

Prior to the pack house plumbing we operated out of buckets and a hose. Brecke made it possible for us to safely and sanitarily wash the vegetables in a professional system.

The system they built is amazing. They plumbed in three wash tubs, a hose outlet so we can wash things outdoors, drainage for our lettuce spinner, a.k.a. washing machine, two sinks, floor drains, and an amazing grey water capturing system so not a drop of water is wasted in our system but is instead recycled into irrigation.

We could not move forward in our mission to combat food insecurity without the partnership and support from concerned companies like Brecke Mechanical Contractors.
